Writing about this part of my life left me with some painful questions: What does it take to write an honest memoir? And what happens to us when we embark on that journey? Would I survive it? To find the answers I needed, I approached some of the writers whose memoirs moved me and asked them how they’d found the courage to put words to their difficult stories. He kept his illness secret from everyone outside our family until only months before his death ten years later.
